The Dream Queen by Paula Anderson

TBN was broadcasting an old and poorly technicolored production of Romeo and Juliet... Romeo was talking of his love... and how he dreamed of her and Mercutio was answering his friend... “O then I see Queen Mab hath been with you: She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes in shape no bigger than a n agate-stone on the forefinger of an alderman, drawn with a team of little atomi over men's noses as they lie asleep.

Her chariot is an empty hazel-nut, made by the squirrel or old grub, time out a'mind the fairies' coach-makers: Her wagon-spokes make of long spinner'legs, the cover of the wings of grasshoppers, her traces of the smallest spider web, her collars of the moonshine's watery beams, her whip of cricket's bone, the lash of film her wagoner a small grey-coated gnat not half so big as a round little worm pricked from the lazy finger of a maid. And in this state she gallops night by night trough lovers' brains, and then they dream of love, o'er courtier's knees...

...about this time a large-bellied man on the couch woke up and grunted... “What's this!” and he changed the channel to football. His wife was nestled under his arm and she shot him a glance but said nothing... “Look babe! There I am!” and he pointed to a number on TV that matched the jersey he was wearing...She patted his round tummy with a smile... “The ball?” she quipped...

Behind the couple on the back of the couch swished the fairy chariot of Queen Mab... and she noted the experience and sent the man a dream about being the ball in the Supper Bowl... and she gave the woman a dream of her husband being a bit thinner and sweeping her off her feet in Romeo style to be played through their sleeping that night... before she swept out the back door to the dog who dreamed of getting his feet muddy and leaving tracks everywhere in the house and couch while being screamed at... and across the forest to a small buck deer curled in the brush and gave him a dream of fighting a huge buck with his horns and winning all the does for himself ... and she flew past squirrels and gave them dream-seeds so they would dream of pirates who steal nuts and... then she swished under the waters and gave dream seeds to fish who would dream of sniffing out the small creatures that encrust themselves with small rocks... she swept over farmland and gave the fat old pony a dream of being a wild mustang running free on the open range... and swept into the barnyard and gave the setting hen a dream of proudly strutting around with her brood of chicks... then into an area of corrals where she gave a standing cow who was snoozing a dream of kicking her milker and escaping to green fields to raise a beautiful calf... she gave another cow a similar dream, but the second cow wanted to bring one of the milkers with her, she dreamed that the milker who always chewed her cud and whose breath always smelled like mint – the old milk cow got out once and ate the mint in the back of the farmhouse garden so she knew what mint was- well this cow named Penelope dreamed of grazing with her friend the milker... but she also dreamed of kicking the other milker... the one with dog-breath and no cud. The Dream Queen zoomed through the barn giving a spider a dream about roping flies with a lasso as they flew by... and then she watched as the lady milker cleaned a sleeping place for the cows while her daughter played near-by – the child fell in the soupy green manure left by the milk-cows and her mom rescued her and hosed her off and brought her in for a lunch of pea soup which was met with wide eyed refusal... and seeds were planted for dreams of swimming in pea soup.

On flew Queen Mab across the countryside spreading dream seeds everywhere until she came to a town and flew into a church where a small girl lay sleeping on her mother's lap... she dreamed of heaven... and a bushy mustached used car salesman in the back dozed and dreamed of God blessing him with so many car sales that he could buy all kinds of wonderful things... and later the preacher dreamed much the same thing... then she flew through the streets and gave a cop a dream about his boss finding him sleeping in his car and eating donuts that caused him to puff up like a blimp so that he couldn't fit in his car... she flitted up a steep building into a hospital room and gave a dying man a last glimpse of home and his mother... then ran down the building to a homeless man who had glimpsed a “72 Challenger on the street that was like the one he bought when he got back from Nam... and she gave him a dream about finding one parked in an abandoned factory where he normally slept, he pulled the cover off it's black shiny body and hopped in and drove around town with cops chasing him gloriously...

On she flew until she had touched the whole wide world. Then she went home to the North Pole and went into her house... where she found Nick, her husband sitting on the couch. “Why did I marry a work-a-colic! Why can't you just send people dreams once or twice a year , and work like I do? I miss your cooking. The elves can hardly make Ramon Noodles right...” “Oh I don't think you're suffering.” she smiled and said as she snuggled down next to him on the couch and patted him on his ample tummy. He was a balding man with a long white flowing beard. He was watching football... and said “There I arm.” pointing at a player on TV... as she nodded off.
